Are the locks at Big Box stores secure?
Most of these retail stores only order locks on a few keyset numbers so keep in mind the last customer that chose a lock off of that hook is using the same key you will be using if you purchase the next lock. Always buy locks from sources that provide unique keysets, preferably patented keys.
Why won’t my keys work?
There are many reasons your keys might not work; older locks have normal wear and tear on both the keys and the pins inside the lock itself that will wear down as time passes. Another very common reason for keys not working would be if it is a copy of an original key. See more below.
Why do my keys pop when I turn them?
Probably have wear in the key or your key may be a duplicate from a duplicate etc. Each generation duplicate is slightly different from the factory original key.
What are restricted keys?
Keys that cannot be duplicated by unauthorized personnel.
Do I need high security locks? Really?
I have them on my home and business. Protecting your property is important but protecting your family is even more so. I do not accept the phrase “Locks only keep honest people out”. Good locks require special tools and longer periods of time to break. Added time is exactly what most criminals want to avoid.
What is master keying?
Proper master keying is done when a masterkey bitting list of non repeating numbers is used to create individual user or change keys so that a lock can be pinned to turn with both the individual key and the masterkey. The result is many locks with different keys and one masterkey to fit all.
What if I don’t have a key to my lock?
Most locksmiths can make keys to most locks. If however your key was lost, I recommend rekeying the lock to a different keyset so that the old keys if found will no longer work in the lock.

What are the benefits of Medeco?
Mostly keys that cannot be made without permission from the owner. Also having a highly resistant cylinder or lock to brute force attempts to open.

There are several different technologies offered by Medeco to fit nearly every budget. It always amazes me when some people spend more money on their shoes than the locks on their homes or businesses.
Should I change my locks out or rekey them?
Depends on the lock. If you have a high quality lock, rekeying may be all you need. If not, choose one that offers as many security benefits as possible.
Why do I have to lift or push/pull my door to get it to lock?
The bolt and strike are out of alignment. Most doors will sag or move in some way with time so the bolt will bind on the strike plate. These problems are easy to correct by calling your trusted security professional.
Can I get all my locks on the same key?
If they are all the same brand or keyway.
What are Heavy Duty or High Security locks?
Heavy duty usually means Grade 1 commercial. High Security locks are those that comply with the Underwriters Lab code UL437.
What are the benefits of Heavy Duty or High Security Locks?
Having a secure lock on your door that will last a long time trouble free. Also having a lock that is resistant to blunt force like hammering, drilling, picking, lock bumping and kicking in.
What do the grades mean on locks?
Grades are established by BHMA to let customers know what level of quality and how many cycles of use to expect. Grade 1 being best and Grade 3 being low quality residential.
What are the lock functions and what do they mean?
Some locks do have options in the function. Entry function has a push button on the inside to lock the door. Storeroom function is always locked and the key only opens the door but does not unlock the lock. There are several other different lock function options depending on the lock you are looking for so make sure you check out the manufacturers list of functions which will describe how they operate.
What are padlocks good for?
There are many applications for padlocks; gates, lockers, trailers etc.
Can I get a padlock to work off my house key?
Not all padlocks have this ability but most padlock manufacturers have a model that can be keyed to most house or business keyways.
What is a panic bar?
A panic bar is used on commercial buildings, schools or churches for the purpose of quickly pushing a bar to exit. The design is to address life safety concerns like fire or other emergency situations when people must exit quickly and safely.
Are push button locks good?
Some are better than others. It is a convenient method of providing access however it not the most secure. I always advise security over convenience and most of the time these two things do not work well together.

What are “mag” locks?
Magnetic locks and armature plates installed on doors to provide controlled access using several types of products like card readers, pin pads or remote releases.
Can you schedule locks?
There are quite a few lock options that provide for scheduling the locked and unlocked periods for a given door. They all require power or batteries and are usually part of an integrated system. There are some stand alone options as well.
Can you open a lock with a phone?
There are a wide range of locks and padlocks coming into the market that can be opened with a smart phone. Some can allow you to text access to another phone for definable periods of time and then expire.

The best example is to have a look at your new car key. There are other options for smart keys or ekeys for standard doors for homes and businesses that allow you to control which locks, what times and for how long they operated.
